Jean Giraud aka Moebius (1938-2012)

I was saddened to hear earlier today of the death of Jean Giraud, perhaps better known as the French comic artist, Moebius. The artist on such titles as The Incal, The Airtight Garage and Lieutenant Blueberry, he was 73. It says something for his cultural status that his death was even reported by the BBC.

Moebius' influence on European comics was huge and back in the eighties even opened up American eyes to a wider world of comics. The brief craze for his work there even culminated in a team-up with Marvel's Stan Lee and the publication of the 2-part 'Silver Surfer – Parable'.

I must confess I never really engaged with many of his comics at a reader level but I can, and do, very much admire his open-line style of graphic storytelling any panel of which would stand as a work of art. His influence is, I think, incalculable, but the doubtless flood of reprints of his work will keep his presence and memory alive for many years to come.
